I'm quite interested in this. Anyone inclined to feed me some info on uniforms and insignia?

For instance what would have been on the arms of a '49 pattern blouse in the 1950's?

All depends on which unit you want to portray? I portray the BAOR in the 1970's as well as the 1950's so can help you can much as possible.

I've seen a Berlin patch that is just a red ring on a black circle, and another version that also has "Berlin" above.
Any idea what the difference is?

I think the one without Berlin is the earlier, but when did the other come in?

Was reading the comments on the post war formation patches, a good reference to these is in the "Blandford Colour Series" "Army badges and insignia since 1945", the author was Guido Rosignoli. This gives you a complete list with some coloured pictures of patches and line drawings of badges worn by Armies throughout the world icluding UK forces .
There is reference in another "Blandford colour series" entitled, "Army uniforms since 1945". This details uniforms and equipment worn by Armies throughout the world including the UK forces.
Hope this is some help to you
Peter

BAOR at various times had the following divisions:
2nd Infantry (included 4th Guards Bde, 5th and 6th Brigades)
4th Infantry (included 11th and 12th Brigades)
6th Armoured (mailed fist) (included 20th Armoured and 31st Lorried Infantry Brigade)
7th Armoured (Desert Rats) (included 7th Armd and 61st LI Brigade)
11th Armoured (Charging bull)(33rd Armoured and 91st Brigade I think)
(Brigades from memory)
as well as all that for a brief period also 16th Para Bde and 24th Brigade.

Divisions reformed in 1960s to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Divisions. At various times divisions chopped and changed -at one point 3rd Div was in UK as Strategic Reserve and at another (1980s) 2nd Div was in UK comprising 15th, 24th and 49th Inf Brigades (of these only 24th was regular-this brigade later becoming Airmobile)

Prior to 1968 IF you are infantry then on your BD you would wear the divisional or brigade badge and your regional/brigade badge
ie if DWR then you MIGHT have worn the Yorkshire Brigade badge, and your BAOR divisional badge too.
Oh just to get more of a nuisance regimental and other tribal patches were also worn too on battle dress (even more so than during WW2) certainly makes recreating national service BAOR VERY interesting!

certainly is BAOR- badge is of Rhine Army Troops so that'd be one of 8 signals regiments c1950s. I think you can rule out Air Liaison Signals unless theres a triangular medium blue with some art deco style wings badge lower down arm? Helion and Company stock a fantastic book on BAOR with lists of all the units serving from 45 to 99-unbelievably written by some Canadian chap. Will try to locate my copy.

I did some research myself and came up with 1952 as the date of intro for that patch. Not conclusive though. Can't recall which Div now either

its for non divisional units-so it would have been worn by either one of the wireless regiments linking NORTHAG with any of its constituent elements (and eavesdropping on the soviets) or a trunk regiment doing the same thing but with lines. Can't seem to find that sodding book.
ha panic over located book its a tiger lily publication 2005 from orbat.com
so 1950
we have
hq baor sigs regt -1952 became hq northag regt, 1953 became 18th army group signals regt (so speak german/dutch and a spot of russian would see you in that unit) (bad oyenhausen)
4th LOC regt- became 19th army group signals in 53. (herford)
11th air formation signals based Lemgo working with 2 Group RAF/RAFG
83 group signals regt later became 12th Air Liaison-wahn
1st wireless regt at munster
and finally 2nd loc regt at dusseldorf.
divisions at time in baor were 2nd, 6th, 7th and 11th.
Hope this helps.

(my betting is your jacket was worn by a member of either HQ regt OR 1st Wireless OR 2nd Lines of Communication regt (keeping the trunk lines going back to UK)
